This project involved a second floor Addition on top of an existing alley garage and renovating the main residence to include a new guest bathroom. The Addition is an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) which is a smaller two-story volume relative to the main residence. The owners currently enjoy a view to the alley from their second floor wrap-around patio and wanted to keep as much of this sight-line as possible. With this goal in mind, the Addition is shaped as an asymmetrical gable end volume, with a higher eave on one end to maximize ceiling height and a lower eave on the opposite end that drops to rail height. The entrance deck with spiral stair access is carved out of the space directly across from the wrap-around patio to enhance the requested view corridor. The Addition interior is a spacious studio layout with a den occupying one corner that can be closed off with triple sliding pocket doors.
