Sustainable Homes: Weatherization

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of discussing “Weatherization” with Anna McCorvey of The River East Design Center, and Jennifer Kulp Johnston with DC Department of Energy and Environment. The River East Design Center serves DC residents of Wards 7 & 8. Their mission is to “empower underserved communities to shape their environment by providing educational opportunities and low-cost design services”

I presented a brief overview of the home’s exterior wall & roof system, looking at insulation and air leakage management. Weatherization seeks to reduce energy usage and utility bills by reducing home air leakage and providing adequate insulation in common problem areas. While we are familiar with sealing doors and windows there are other areas like attic insulation that can we forget to look at (out of sight, out of mind!).

Jennifer discussed various rebate programs available to assist low-income DC residents to weatherize their home and reduce utility bills. You can download a copy of our presentation by scrolling down to the bottom of River East Design’s post here: Weatherization Seminar
